A Mortality Event Involving Endangered Pallid Sturgeon (Scaphirhynchus albus) Associated with Gyrodactylus conei n. sp. (Monogenea: Gyrodactylidae) Effectively Treated with Parasite-S (Formalin)

چکیده

In January 2020, a mortality event was documented in endangered Pallid Sturgeon (Scaphirhynchus albus) at the Neosho National Fish Hatchery (Neosho, MO, USA). Moribund fish appeared emaciated, with hemorrhages on fins and rostrums. Mortality steadily increased, prompting an investigation into cause. No viral or bacterial pathogens were detected; however, high number of novel Gyrodactylus sp. identified body surface affected fish. Treatment parasites formalin product effective, decreased. Herein, we describe species conei using combination morphological molecular data. Due to listing host as species, concept parasite conservation is also discussed.

Gyrodactylus eyipayipi sp. n. (Monogenea: Gyrodactylidae) from Syngnathus acus (Syngnathidae) from South Africa.

Gyrodactylus eyipayipi sp. n. is described from the skin, gills, flute and male brood pouch of captive specimens of the greater pipefish Syngnathus acus L., collected for and maintained at the Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town, South Africa. It is the first marine Gyrodactylus species reported from the African continent. The new species is compared to the three known Gyrodactylus species affecti...

Speciation by host switch and adaptive radiation in a fish parasite genus Gyrodactylus (Monogenea, Gyrodactylidae).

Four hundred Gyrodactylus species have been formally described, but the estimated number of species in this fish ectoparasite genus of Monogenean Platyhelminthes is more than 20,000. The unusually high species richness has lead to the hypotheses of speciation and adaptive radiation via host switching. These hypotheses were tested by reconstructing a molecular phylogeny for the subgenus G. (Limn...

Occurance of Gyrodactylus spp (Monogenea: Gyrodactylidae) from Iranian freshwater fishes

Thirty three Gyrodactylus spp have been found on the gills and body surface of both wild and farmed freshwater fishes in Iran. Among them nine species have been identified up to the species level, which are new locality records. The identification of the others, mainly belong to endemic wild freshwater fishes, need further studies. Among the known species, Gyrodactylus derjavini (Mikhailov, 197...

Functional morphology of prey capture in the sturgeon, Scaphirhynchus albus.

Acipenseriformes (sturgeon and paddlefish) are basal actinopterygians with a highly derived cranial morphology that is characterized by an anatomical independence of the jaws from the neurocranium. We examined the morphological and kinematic basis of prey capture in the Acipenseriform fish Scaphirhynchus albus, the pallid sturgeon. Feeding pallid sturgeon were filmed in lateral and ventral view...
